Are dust covers needed?

I recently got an HTC Incredible 2 and I am looking for a case for it. I am looking at either the Otterbox Commuter, or the Sedio Active case. They are both pretty much the same except the Otterbox has dust covers for the headphone jack and charging port and the Sedio doesn't. I feel the Sedio case looks better and might be slimmer.

I know the headphone jack cover isn't that necessary, what I'm worried about is the charging port. I will never understand why almost every phone had a built in cover for any port a few years ago and now these new high tech phones are stopping that and leaving a sensitive port exposed.

Basically, if the charging port is damage prone and a dust cover is preferred then I'll get the Otterbox. If it doesn't make much difference then I'll get the Sedio.

I can't say whether or not it's needed, but I can vouch for the Otterbox Commuter. I've the Desire HD and it does add a little bulk to the phone, but when it's in your pocket, you don't really notice.

Not what you asked, but still kinda relevant :p

I have the Outterbox Commuter case for my Atrix and love it. It's just the right size and fits in my belt clip case. The one thing that I really like about it, was the port covers. I don't carry my phone in a bag or pocket, but when I exercise outdoors, I rather have all these ports protected for more insurance.

never needed any dust covers. have been using phones without covers at all for many years and never really had any problems
