Are Google+ and Hangouts required for Android to work

Hi

I am new to Android and see a lot of nice applications I can't install as I always get low disk space errors ( I already moved most apps to SD card and clear caches). The application I don't use and are the biggest memory users are Google+ (56MB)and Hangouts(30MB) . Can I savely uninstall them ithout affecting Android functionality ?

Thank you
Markus

Welcome to the forums! :)

What device do you have?

Generally speaking...No, neither are required for functionality. You probably already have another SMS app installed, but if you do not make sure to install another

You say can, so it is not a must. I assume the Sony phone has a default SMS app so I don't require Hangouts.

Thank you
Markus

You don't need Hangouts or google+ if you don't want to use them. You can't unistall them but you can unistall the updates and doable both apps. That will safely free up some space for you.
Find the app under "all" applications and select unistall updates, then it will give you the option to disable the app.

They aren't required but enhance the experience in my opinion. I only use Hangouts and haven't sent an SMS in forever. On the rare occasion I do, it's nice to have them in a merged conversation. As for G+, the experience enhanced again across various Google products.

How is location working for you, since it's tied in with G+

Actually it's not. G+ is only required if you wish to be "social" on Google. I can tell you location works just fine in the PRC, where there is no G+. I don't use Hangouts, because of non-availability unless using a VPN. I'm either using the stock SMS app, or IM'ing via WeChat, Skype or QQ.

If you want to separate the two just open the Hangouts app and go into settings, SMS and disable it. If you don't have another SMS app installed you can grab one from the Playstore. Inside your phone settings you should have a "Default Applications" area where you can switch to whatever app you want to use for SMS, as long as you have them installed.

Yes. I don't have a G+ profile at all, as well as not having the app installed, and location works just fine. I normally use GPS only, but occasionally let it use wireless info too, and both work normally.

(I do have a Google account for the Play Store but it's older than G+ and there is no associated G+ profile - Google occasionally prompt me to create one but I ignore them.)
