Are Kies/SmartSwitch and Android File Transfer app incompatible?

Hi experts. This posting is not really about computers — it's just that computers need to be mentioned. On my Mac, there are three separate operating systems (on entirely separate partitions). Only the system that I use regularly has SmartSwitch/Kies installed in it (for backing up my Samsung Galaxy s5). When I try to open Android File Transfer app in this system (that also has SmartSwitch, and therefore, Kies installed), Android F.T. simply will not open. Yet, if I boot up in any one of the other two operating systems, Android F. T. works like a charm.

I was wondering whether Kies/ SmartSwitch, and the Android File Transfer app, are incompatible. Can anyone tell me, for certain?
