Are you a UK user who cannot download Android apps?

First up apologies if you already know this, I only just fixed it and wanted to spread the solution.

All day today I have been unable to download any Android apps from the marketplace, it's been very annoying. It turns out the problem is to do with Google's new offer for UK users to change their googlemail.com email account to a gmail.com account.
Once I changed over my HTC Desire was suddenly unable to download apps from the Android Marketplace, it would forever say

I have this problem, but under my Gmail settings, there doesn't seem to be a way to go back to my googlemail address. Does anyone know how to do this?

For anyone who has changed to Gmail

On a computer, log into your gmail.
Click Settings (top right)
Click Accounts and Imports
At the bottom, next to 'Change Account Settings', click on 'Google Account Settings'.
On the opened page it will tell you near the top whether you have a gmail or googlemail address.
Go back to the previous page, next to 'send mail as' there is a small 'switch to gmail?' link, click this.
Then, click the link that says 'go back to googlemail', then on the next page click the next button to confirm (I think it's the big blue button).
Then click on the 'Google Account Settings' link from the earlier step, this should now confirm you are back on a googlemail account.

This is how I sorted it.

Cheers.

Thanks for identifying the issue. You're completely right, this is the reason it's broken.

But now I have a choice of either restoring my phone from scratch losing everything on it (remember i can't download a back-up data app) or i can change my email address back to @googlemail.com until i get rid of this phone. Neither of which i particularly want to do. It's just stupid. Hope they fix this soon.

The mad thing is that there is no actual need to change your email in the first place. Even though you have a googlemail.com account people can still email you at gmail.com.

Since moving back to googlemail.com I have been telling people my email address is still gmail.com and it all works fine.

So in your case you can move back to googlemail and just tell people you have gmail. Your phone will start working again too.

Sorted.
