Everyone who has various artist albums please star Issue 5938 - android - Better support for Album Artist vs. Artist tag data in music player - Project Hosting on Google Code issue. It's such a simple little thing that iTunes (and thus presumably the iPhone) that Android gets so horribly wrong. Even without using Album Artist, at least ignore the Artist field when viewing your library sorted by Album.
