R Myers, it sounds like you are trying to hook up your kindle to your home network. If so you need a wireless router if you don't have one already. a wireless arouter connects between your computer and your modem and brodcasts your modem's signal to wireless devices (it also allows desktops to remain connected via a wire). when you set up the router, you will need to giveit a name and password protected (you never want a home router that is not password protected as that gives people other than those you intend access to your network. Once you've set up your router, turning onthe wireless signal on your kindle will alow it to detect wireless networks in range. one of those should be the name of your router. to connect to it, just type in the password for your router into the kindle and it should connect. I'm pretty sure that you can makeit so that the kindle remembers the password to your router, so that the next time you want to use it this way, all you have to do is tell it to connect and it will do so automatically.
Another way to connect is to do so through a device that already has it's own internet connection, such as a phone, a tablet or mifi enabled notebook. connecting to these kind of devices is called tethering. the software in some of these devices (usually phones running android) often allows users to tether other devices to them either wirelessly or through a USB connection. these connections are sometimes disabled by device sellers because they want to sell you the service. to get around these restrictions, you can instal software applications or custom roms in your device that allows you enable tethering.. If you would like to go that route, then you'll need to ask some of the fine folks here to explain in detail how to do it in the particular device you want to tether to.
The last option you have is replacing the kindle. there is a higher end version that has a built in mobile connection. all you need is to pay the one time fee (IIRC it is $20 but I could be wrong) and you'll have liftime mobile connection on the device. This means that you won't have to connectto any other device to download your books, the kindle will have its own connection and will download onit's own provided it si within range of a cellular network.
Hope that helps.
