Assumption of liability

Lurker
I have read thru the other threads and now I am even more confused. Here's my situation.
I have been a 2nd line with my dad on VZW for many years, probably at least 8 years. I am finally ready to get my own account and a smartphone. So before I bought a phone, I called VZW and said I want to know if I can keep my old number on my new phone. They said yes. They told me to go ahead and buy the phone, then call back. Did that. Then they said I have to Activate the new phone first. So...I did that.
NOW they say they cannot switch my old number to my new phone because it's already a VZW number and activated! And they said i should have switched the number before i bought the phone! And nothing can be done! I can return the phone to the store, do a return and start allllll over or just suck it up and change my number.

It really ticks me off that I was calling them over and over trying to do it the right way and when it COULD have been done but too many CSR's messed the whole thing up.

Am I really stuck? They said they cannot change it because it is a system limitation. I guess I believe that. But dang!

And will it screw up my dad's plan if I move off of it? Or should I just leave it be and use that old 2nd line for one of the kids?

Many thanks! I am so confused!!

Did you ever talk to a tier 2 rep? The first person you talk to can't do much. If you get put on hold and transferred the second rep can usually fix things. Your dad should have to release the number first.

You should have upgraded the first line with the 2 year contract phone. Why start up a second line of service with a contract? Each line is independent of eachother and disconnecting a line under contract comes with an ETF. A cell phone company isn't going to port a # and contract to another # with another contract. It leads to a disconnect and contracts aren't switched. Is the old line out of contract?
