AT&T and the Phantom Data Charge

So I got my lovely HTC One (don't regret it) last month. Well, over a month ago. When I got it, the salesman gave me all sorts of speeches about data. I'm an advanced mobile user, I know my stuff!

Anyway, about a week in, I noticed it wasn't tracking data properly. So I texted AT&T for my usage, 0MB. I called 2 days later, concerned now. He said it was working and I'd used 2.90MB. All's good, my accountings were working now.

Fast foward to my bill. It reports Iu sed 390MB, 100+MB of it in the period in which it wasn't tracking. After a long thing on the phone, and being obstinate and pointing out I'm a very advanced mobile user and know my shit, giving dates and tiems of calls and data usage, I had the way mobile data explained ot me over and over. Finally, I got to my day-by-day breakdown and got it all cleared amidst a "tsk tsk tsk don't go over again" speech.

TO the kind sales lady's credit, I got the $20 removed. But seriously.

I've heard similar reports from other users (don't remember which carrier they were using though).

Often it's caused by system updates and Google Play updates, which sometimes aren't reported correctly. Did you ever find out the cause for your phone?

At&t was the cause. Their servers misrepresented the data for nearly two weeks

Here's the short of it:

From about Dec. 22nd to January 5th or 6th, AT&T reported my data usage as 0MB. When I used their data usage text service, it reported 0MB. THen, I made a call, and got told it was at 2.90MB. So my measurements were accurate for that billing period.

Then, my bill comes and I had nearly 120MB in used data prior to that period, where they told me 0MB.

Get Onovo and never worry about data usage again. It will even cut you off but allow WiFi usage if you so wish once you reach your limit. Typically when I get near the end of my data allotment the system sends me a text at 80% and again at 90% so this seems strange.
