AT&T branded Samsung Captivate on T-Mobile

Hi everyone. Just registered here. Please go easy on me. I tried searching and found similar threads, but I'd like reassurance for my exact issue if anyone has tried it.

My girlfriend is on T-Mobile with a crappy dumb-phone and she has the $10/month dumb-phone unlimited data plan.

I was able to grab a mint AT&T branded Samsung Captivate for cheap. It's rooted running 2.2 and has been SIM unlocked. I know that when she pops in the SIM, voice and texting will work with no issues. However, what happens to the data plan?

I've seen many topics posted where users say that because it's a non T-Mobile branded phone, that the data plan she has now will work without issue and she won't have increased data charges or an increase in her data plan.

Can anyone let me know for sure if this is true? The last thing I want to do is screw something up with her T-mobile contract while trying to do a nice thing for her.

Thanks so much for any advice you guys have, I greatly appreciate it.

I'd check with T-Mobile what their policy is. You don't have to tell them what you are thinking, all you have to ask is if you use a feature phone sim in a smartphone, will it affect your data plan?

I'd be more concerned with data speed. You realize that the AT&T Captivate operates at 850 MHz and 1900 MHz for 3G/HSPA bands and T-Mobile uses 900 MHz and 1700 MHz, so it won't connect at anything faster than 2G speeds.

Yeah, I was aware of that after I got it. Worst case scenario, if it's too much of a hassle or the phone is too slow for her, I can sell it on eBay and get more than I paid for it.

The phone she uses now is unbearably slow for data anyways (only uses a WAP browser). And 3/4 of the time, she's in a WiFi hotspot at home and work so it's not that bad.

This will be a massive upgrade for her until 3rd quarter 2012 when she can upgrade through T-Mobile directly, even if she can only use 2G speeds when outside a WiFi spot.

Thank you for your response

If she's only using the 2G network, there's not much chance T-mobile will care about the data plan, but checking is always prudent. You could always put the sim in and turn off mobile data, only connecting via wifi.

Well we gave it a shot...took about 5 minutes for the SIM to kick in and register it but everything works smooth. 2G speeds are obviously pretty slow but they are still much faster than her old phone. Voice/texting/etc everything works just as it should normally.

I am running into an issue though, but apparently it's a common problem. If she receives a picture message, the photo comes up as a video slideshow and it plays 10 seconds of a still image. But, the picture is incredibly low resolution and can hardly be seen.

I haven't found an online solution. A few other people say that the issue goes away if you install a different texting application but I'd rather not do that unless necessary.

Any ideas?

Nope, that's one for the Captivate Forums.

Hi, newbie here.

  • I am trying to leave AT&T and go to T-Mobile. I have an AT&T Samsung Captivate that I want to use on T-Mobile.
  • They sent me the sim card.
  • AT&T gave me the unlock code.
  • I got registered with T-Mobile.
  • Voice & text worked immediately.
  • No internet of any kind, even after an hour or so with T-mobile tech support.
I figured I would at least get edge/G2, but that's not the case.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
