AT&T CEO: We'll push Android phones

And how many will be getting timely updates?

None. they will just come out with a new version of the phone needing an update so if you want the newest software you will either need to root the phone or buy the new version of it. Why provide an update when they can develop a newer phone with the lastest junk knowing there are people who will jump on the new one, extending their 2yr contract or paying out the butt for the new phone out of contract.

I don't care about the volume of phones....just update the <censured> OS like you said you would! Lastly, I don't care how well they bling out ANYmore samsungs I am so done with this line of phone.

Welcome to the world of smartphones and greedy carriers and manufacturers. No need for proof. Really, you think this even needs to be questioned? My only experience has been with WinMo phones but I am sure others here can attest to this greedy practice way before the XDA - circa 2002 by the way.

Nice Try

I've been a smartphone enthusiast for years, have a lot of experience and challenge for proof.

AT&T and Verizon have been my carriers for a decade. I have four lines activated for the phones I use.

As someone who works in the tech sector, I routinely have the opportunity to acquire new phones for my use. I'm more than familiar with the carriers.

Proof?

Here's the proof. Froyo has been out since before the Captivate was even released. Not to mention that the GPS has been broken since day one also. Here we are about to roll into FEBRUARY 2011 and still no fix for either problem.

Galaxy is yesterday's news and none of the carriers care if we get our phones fixed at this point. All they care about is selling broken phones to uninformed customers until the new Samsung phone that is right around the corner is released.

If they really cared Samsung and the carriers would have put a team of software geeks together and we would have had Froyo and the GPS fix in August.

John

Translation: Once we found out that we were losing our iPhone exclusivity, we thought, "Oh crap, why do we have all of those eggs in the one basket? Oh right because we don't give a crap about any of our customers that don't buy our savior phone." So we decided to lie some more about Android so people won't leave us in droves and by the time Froyo comes to the Captivate, there will be bigger and better phones out there that make the Captivate look like crap. By an iPhone from AT&T. We make a crap load of money off of them.

Ok first off someone needs to take a deep breathe and relax.

I wasnt stating it as a fact, although it does seem to happen. With all the winmo phones I have owned none got an update from the carrier but shockingly a new winmo phone would come out with a newer version of winmo running on it. Sure c
I could of just put the newest winmo os on the phone I had but eh call it laziness and being able to get the newer phone pretty cheap.

And im not frustrated about froyo not coming out. Ill end up with a new phone before thats even released.

2manyPHONES has a point: typically a company does not see it as a profitable business move to invest R&D (time and money) into releasing updates for already-sold phones or other consumer electronics (read: no immediate return-on-investment, no new profits for shareholders) versus shifting the benefits of the new OS versions onto the new models, adding to the bullet-point list of benefits the consumer will get by shelling out money (read: actual profits, immediate benefit) on a new phone with new hardware and software features.

Once a product is released into the market, it's pushed heavily for maybe a month or so, and then the company wants to cut the lines and break free of having to support it ASAP so they can move onto pushing and selling the newer hardware. Rinse, repeat. Remember all those Galaxy S commercials for a while? When was the last time you saw one? Yet the Captivate remains AT&T's flagship Android phone currently for sale.

It's all part of the trend to sacrifice long-term profitability for what seems best in the short-term. Investing in updates and demonstrating precedent for being a company that provides long-term support is an abstract move that provides only long-term and hard-to-measure (albeit real) benefits. These days companies don't do well with that. If you can't count and measure it, and it doesn't provide ROI within 6 months, it's not "important".

The only link/proof necessary is in Samsung and AT&T's record of behavior. Samsung is notorious for being absolutely horrible about updates, and AT&T is notorious for being absolutely horrible about holding them up until they can rape, molest, and corrupt the new software for their own anti-consumer ends. Put the two together, and you have the situation we are in now regarding 2.2 for the Captivate. There was never any real question that AT&T would be the absolute last carrier to release 2.2 for their Galaxy S model phone. First it was North America being last... then it was just the USA, and now with T-Mobile having released 2.2 it's just AT&T.

These "devices" are more than just phones. They are mini laptops! Almost like having a PC in your pocket. How many of you have a PC that is still "stock" ? I use to keep 2 PC's and use one simply for experimentation. The sides were never on it! I was always playing, tweaking, replacing, etc.
Root your phone, flash some ROMs and learn how to make it work for you, just like your PC, or just go back to a Razor.

How did the subject line get to be so wrong? Surely AT&T CEO was misquoted. The truth must be:

AT&T CEO: We'll punish Android phones this year.

Listen, no hard feelings here, but ... are you actually serious about this? Can you "post a link to prove" you don't work for either AT&T or Samsung?

That's why I like HTC. They seem to come out with quality phones every several months and just update them. Samdung, on the other hand, is flooding with new versions of their phones and not updating any. :(

I like htc phones as well, if the aria wasnt so tiny I would of gotten that phone. To be honest im not too concerned with the updates as I get a new phone every couple months. But for the person who doesnt switch phones like me this whole not getting the update would be very aggrevating especially since t-mobile has released froyo...

The only reason why im still with AT&T is cause a family plan on verizon for my 5phones with data and whatnot is more then what I pay thru AT&T.

I find this whole concept of getting an updated OS very interesting. I've been an AT&T customer for almost 20 years. I've been using smartphones for over 10 years. Received a bug fix now and then, but never once received an OS version upgrade. Seeing Verizon, Rodgers & Tmobile rolling out updates makes me hopeful, but I'm still a bit skeptical about AT&T jumping on the bandwagon.
