If you're on Windows just use odin. If it's not working you're likely not using the correct image for your phone.

I'm on linux. Had to run vm to get odin working.

I think heimdall is said to work well on Mac

I have a MacBook Pro, and i partitioned the hard drive using "BootCamp", which is built into my Mac(probably yours too). It's made to accept Windows, so i used Windows7, and it works fine. I have 400gbs for Mac, and 100gbs for Windows. I call it my MacWindows. Check it out.

Oracle VirtualBox and Parallels are other options if you want good VM...Not certain VB works on Mac though.
