alot of folks root simply to be able to run a paricular app that requires root access. othres root becasue they want to change software and install a custom rom. others go a step further and like to mod other parts of the phone.
the more important question,is: what do you want to gain from rooting? if you dont really have answers to that, rooting may not be the best thing to do,as it does technically void warranty, and can cause damage to your phone in some situations.
You will be able to mod your device functions and use apps that require root access. You can also install custom ROMs into your device which could actually eliminate bloat wares and make your device faster.
However, you will void your warranty if you root so proceed with caution.
