how do you get rid of the at&t messages app?

If you are running a stock rom (if you haven't rooted or done anything to it. If you don't know what rooting is and you bought the device from at&t then it's not rooted 
.) then there is no way to remove it although if you are running android version 4.0 or higher you can go into the settings on your device and disable it
