Root [at&t] Need help rooting

Hi all,

I have been searching high and low and have not found the info that I need.

I have tried towelroot and it says "This phone is not currently supported." I tried typing in the 3 different codes after tapping the welcome to towelroot v3 logo 3 times and that didn't work.

I made the mistake of updating first thing after I got the phone.

Here is my phone's info:

Model #: Samsung-SM-G900A

Android Version: 4.4.2

Baseband Version: G900AUCU2ANG3

Kernel Version: 3.4.0-2178781

Well you may have to return to stock and start over,I've looked all over the web and TowelRoot is what you need to root the S5.
I could be wrong.

I backed up all my data and did a factory reset without any luck. One site I found said that in order for towelroot to work, the kernel version had to be made on or before 06/03/14. The kernel version on my phone was made on 07/23. So far I haven't had any luck.

I don't know what the issue is, I've followed the instructions to a T and every time I keep getting a failed error. This is what it is showing me, every time:

<ID:0/005> Added!!

<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..

If anyone knows what I am doing wrong, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, going to give it a shot now. I did try a factory reset and clearing the cache/data when I tried this morning, but that didn't seem to help.

EDIT: It is working this time. Thank you again Amoco for all of your help. Greatly appreciated. Now, one more question and I promise I will leave you alone, lol. Best place to find custom roms?

Hi Guys,

After searching high and low on multiple forums, and only finding Towelroot as the only option - this short/simple thread seems to be the most informative I've found.

I'm no stranger to rooting, but I'm honestly baffled there's no other root options. We just got my wife an AT&T GS5. Her Kernel is a July 2014 build so Towelroot is not an option.

If I'm reading this right, I now believe the only root option for her phone is what's outlined here... go back to original/stock then use Towelroot as described, correct?

Question 2: I love her S5 so much I'm looking at ordering an S5 Active for myself. Do I keep my fingers crossed that it has a Kernel that will work with Towelroot and root it before any updates?

I'm shocked there aren't options. I read Geohot started working for Google but no one else can figure out how to root this phone? Yikes!

Either way, good to be back in the forums. This board is by far the most helpful and nicest group of people.

@ FLAWLESSVW: From what I've found to, Towelroot is the only option. Using Oden I installed a kernel from March 2014 and Towelroot worked but now my fingerprint scanner doesn't work.

Yeah, I have also rooted other phones, but the last one I had rooted before my AT&T S5 was a HTC Evo on Sprint and that one was easy compared to the S5, lol.

Good luck with whatever you do.

EDIT: Ugh... In my excitement for a brand new phone I got some newb-itis and failed to read above. That link links to http://www.androidrootz.com/2014/05/how-to-unroot-galaxy-s5-complete-stock.html?m=1 which appears to spell the process out and has videos. Forgive my oversight. I will give it a closer look tomorrow and if I'm successful I will try to detail a few of the basics out here to help anyone else looking to do this. ... Still open to any tips or stumbling blocks you may have encountered along the way but it looks like this shouldn't be too bad, fingers crossed!

JohnDoe: thanks again for the info.

Happy to report I ended up pulling the trigger on the S5 Active. It will be here tomorrow and I'd like to give this a shot right off the bat.

I'm a little rusty with Odin. Would you possibly list out the steps you took? Doesn't have to be insanely detailed, just a high level overview if you have the time.
My best guess so far is something along the lines of:
1. Download & install Odin v3.10.?? from http://odindownload.com/ and install (on PC)
2. Download stock firmware from link provided in this thread and save to PC.
3. Here's where I get rusty: thinking from within Odin, open the firmware in the "PDA" section...? Not sure what options I'll need selected here, etc.

If you guys could help put me on the right track, or if this is already spelled out elsewhere point me that direction... It would be immensely helpful to me and I'd imagine other users who might want to follow this method.

Thanks in advance guys, I am looking forward to the new phone (and hopefully to a successful root process!)

Awesome news guys...
Got my GS5 Active today
Kernel say from May 2014... Was able to throw Towelroot on right away! I'm installing SuperSU right now to confirm... It's trying to disable Knox (taking quite a while too...)

My question is: how can I play it safe and disable all updates? I haven't activated the phone yet and am hesitant to until I figure out how to make sure the Kernel doesn't get updated.

Thanks in advance guys!

Knox shouldn't take too long to disable. Close and reopen supersu if it is.

Go into settings, search for auto update or automatic updates, and disable it.

Thanks astro.
Since I'm using Titanium Backup Pro I searched for any apps that invoke OTA/System updates and froze them. The main ones seem to be
AT&T Software Update
FW Upgrade
Local FOTA
wssyncmlnps
I also froze the KNOX Notification Manager.

All seems well so far and root is holding steady so I'm enjoying and keeping my fingers crossed!

I wish you luck! I hope that something like chain fire is made for at&t so we don't have to rely on an exploit for our root.

Good News! You can now root NG3! In order for it to work, you have to flash an ND3 kernel and use towel root then go back to an NG3 kernel. Follow this guide. [How-To] Root G900AUCU2ANG3 | AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5 | XDA Forums
(Note: On step 4 in this tutorial I recommend you use towelroot reboot and use towelroot again multiple times. Root Checker may say you don't have root when you really do. So test your root on other root apps such as cputemp or battery stats plus or disable service or any other app that uses root before moving to step 5). I tried it and worked like a charm.
