Verizon is at disadvantage of having to pair two distinct radios in their 4G phones, CDMA and LTE. But for AT&T, HSPA+ to LTE switching is better, more stable because LTE is basically advanced HSPA technology which all belong to WCDMA. That's why we see far less signal issue threads on AT&T.
Verizon is using CDMA for 1X voice/text, 3G data and LTE for fast data. They are trying to move to VoLTE in the future to solve this problem, but it's going to take long while. But Verizon still has much larger LTE coverage than AT&T. So there is trade off for both network.
