Help Audio Quality of the HTC Magic

Hi all,

I am on the verge of signing a contract with vodafone for the magic but listening to music on my phone is quite a big factor (the other handset I was considering was the Nokia 5800 Xpress!) so I was just wondering if anyone had used the magic mp3 player yet and what they thought of the audio quality?

It would be useful to know how it compares to the iphone because the mp3 player is not a feature that anyone has focussed on in reviews (except for the fact that there is no 3.5mm jack - boo)

Can anyone offer any guidance?

I have listened to a few tracks with the headset that is supplied with the handset, and they are very bassy tracks. I am very impressed with the music quality, though don't know how it compares to an iPhone. Hope that helps :)
 
I am not an audiophile but I love listening to music on my G1...it's good enough for me. I would hope the Magic is equally as good. See if you can try it in person before you buy, or see if your carrier has a return policy.

I would give my experience a thumbs up. We even have Tune Wiki which you have to jailbreak your iPhone to get.
 
As I write this, just for you, I'm listening to an MP3 on my HTC Magic.

It's at full volume on the handset and full volume on the supplied earphones (the in-line mic has a volume wheel). I have to say - quite impressed. A little on the tinny side - but I am pushing it, and there's no EQ to tweak the sound.

Right - back to a more civilised volume....

The sound is - for my money - every bit as good as my 4th Gen iPod Nano. I stress.... as good at THIS volume with these earphones.

I don't like the earphones - I like rubberised in-ear earphones - so I'm just waiting for my adaptor to come so I can use my regular earbuds. My prefference, so don't chalk that up against it.

Incidentally, I've also tested this with my foxL bluetooth stereo speakers - not only was a REALLY simple to setup, they worked REALLY, REALLY well.

Iain - with regards to the proprietary connector for the headphones, does the adaptor to use regular headphones not come with the handset? If not, where is best to get the adaptor from?

Its an HTC ext-usb socket. As I love HTC phones I have loads of accessories and always use a microphone adaptor so that i can use my own headphones. You can find them cheap on ebay or play.com or amazon.co.uk or other site.

I got my Magic in the first week from pre-order. There was, alas, no adaptor.

I believe this was the case with the T-Mobile G1 and that later shippments have the apaptor in the box. I've heard a rumour from the Magic unboxing video over at androidcommunity.com (Video here: Vodafone HTC Magic video unboxing! | Android Community) that later shippings of the Magic will also come with the adaptor.

It's all acedemic as I didn't get one! I've ordered mine from www.clove.co.uk/htc - select the magic then browse the accessories.

I found the sound is amazing for a phone, I was impressed with my old Sony W810i, then I had then LG Viewty:o, crap! Got a set of Sennheiser headphones and that improved the situation. Since I got my magic, I'm a little miffed I can't plug them in but haven't bust a gut to source and adapter as the supplied headphones are good, and the playback is crystal at 44hz 32000kbps. :D

Yeah, the output quality is great. It's down to the head/ear phones. The earphones bundled with the iPhone are (or were) incredibly poor, and the ones that come with the Magic aren't much better.

I use Sony ear phones and a Sone Stereo Bluetooth HBH-DS200. I get great quality and no annoying wire-tangle nightmare!
 
Do the earphones that come with the Magic have the ones which you have to make go around your neck (there is one earphone with a short cord to it and the other a long cord)? I've tried to look for a pic but I can't.
 
Uhm, hello...

After couple of days with the phone, honestly, the sound is pretty average.
It's not the quality, but the volume. It is REALLY LOW, when there is noise you can barely hear the music.

I am wondering if buying headphones will help the situation? People who use their headphones do you notice a difference in volume?

Is there maybe an app that boosts sound?

Hi, it seems that I'm the only one complaining about sound quality. I think maybe is a problem with my magic. When I hear music I note much more noise than with my PC. the same MP3, the same earphones with YC A300, and the magic produces background noise. anyone with this problems?
