Auto LTE toggling based on usage, to conserve battery?

I'm #11,457 in line to buy a Galaxy Nexus when it's released, and coming from a BlackBerry, I share a common concern about battery life on these LTE devices.

So I'm curious, what is available to automatically toggle the LTE radio based on data usage?

For instance, for all those times when the phone is sitting in my pocket, I'm perfectly happy if my Weatherbug and Facebook and even Pandora are connected over 3G, with the LTE radio switched off. But when I'm cruising websites or streaming video, or other data-intensive tasks, I'd want it switched on.

Is there any app -- or custom ROM development on other phones -- that can handle this sort of automatic switching? Or would this need to be something cooked in to the hardware?

It definitely could be something that a developer puts into their rom, though I haven't seen anything like that. However, stock Android and other variations like sense and blur come with a widget to toggle 4g on and off, I do it now with 3g and it works just fine.
