Automplete/Predictive Dialing

Guys, which versions of Android (OS) have autocomplete built into the dialer?

You know, I start entering a number and it makes suggestions

Also, can you suggest any good dialers that do this? I have a couple on my phone now but dont' like their UI/look.

I thought that was on by default (though it may work slightly differently to how you expect) :confused:

Do you have the lastest version of the dialer? Try uninstalling updates and re-starting the phone: you should then get the option to install the latest version.
 
I think a good app that works just as well as the native dialer, contacts app, and messaging app is Contacts+. It will replace all of these and work just as well as the originals, if not better :)
 
As I recall, Android 4.3 got the T9-style dialer, and 4.4 revamped that to also search local businesses.

CallApp may be another one to look at.
 
The thing is, my current phone is a Nexus ONE (yep, it's THAT old) and if it weren't for the fact that the screen is and has always been a pain in the a$$ (virtually NO touch sensitivity) I wouldn't even buy something else as I use it very little but it's time and the phones I've been looking at don't have the 4.3 version.

Could I upgrade to it, how does it work, where do I get it and is it free?

I don't want anything fancy, just predictive dialing with a good interface :)

I looked at Contacts + and CallApp but didn't see anything about predictive dialing. However, I like the idea behind contacts +

Can the look of the actual dialer be changed to thicker numbers or something?

Hey, no shame in rocking an N1 - I still use mine on a daily basis (dedicated for in-car use, but it still counts!). There are a variety of 4.3/4.4 ROMs available for the N1; I've used a few of them, but found them to be a bit lacking in speed, stability, or both - AND they require a bit of hackery since the partitioning scheme loaded up on the N1 doesn't have enough space to accommodate the newer (and larger!) Android builds.

If you're not looking to replace the device, I think you'd be better off looking at Contacts+ or CallApp to replace your default dialer.

It's been a while since I've played with either of those apps, but I'm pretty sure that predictive dialing is included - in fact, I'm reasonably confident that it will be a feature of just about any third-party dialer.

Feel free to try out a bunch of different dialers available on the Play Store to find one with the look you're after :)
 
Codesplice, that's where I started looking but there were so many so I thought I'd try here to maybe save some time :)

I like my phone fine but I always have to press many times to get things done as the sensitivity sucks and I'm tired of it.

Also, I'm getting a dual sim phone. Got one from china (cheapo phone) and the touch difference was amazing. It lasted about 5 minutes and started acting up :(

Also, contrast was very low on the screen.
 
Another one that I *think* I can recommend: DialApp. The first screenshot shows the T9-style predictive dialing that I think you're looking for.

(I haven't used that particular app, but I have had good luck with some of Dexetra's other apps.)

Yeah, that touchscreen was always plagued with sensitivity issues - though, to be fair, it's from a time before multi-touch was the norm. As I recall, it didn't even support tracking more than one finger at a time until the 2.2.1 update, and even then it had serious cross-axis issues when tracking the touchpoints across the screen. I frequently run into lingering issues with mine (where it will try to register touches an inch or more away from my finger), but a quick toggle of the Power button usually seems to clear it up.
 
It was a pain in the a$$ and I'm not talking about gestures, just plain old touching anything I've lost calls because I couldn't get into the dial pad to press 1 fast enough :(

I've seen this T9 option on many dialers. Does that mean predictive dialing or something and does it work for NUMBERS and not just text?
 
T9 refers to the old-school style of text input on phones, where you'd enter a series of numbers and the software would interpret that into words based on what letters are on which number key.

So if I started entering "5-5-6-", the dialer would present contacts with "JON" in their name.
 
Ah, so, unless they mention autocomplete or predictive dialing, should I assume that it does NOT have it?

Does Jellybean 4.3 have it fer sure?

CM7.2 was the last stable release for the N1 - is that the version you are on?

According to the official Changelog, T9 predictive dialing should be included:

It's actually a feature labeled as "smart dialling". It's built in to every Android phone I know, and almost every contact app I've tried has it: Contacts+, Go Contacts, TouchPal, exDialer, etc. Maybe that's why you can't find info on it, you were looking for the wrong terms.

Do you know if it's in the cyanogen mod too and if so, how do I turn that option on?

As far as I know yes. As of 4.0, better smart dialing is one of the main features highlighted built into Android itself. So unless CM uses a dialer app that removes this, it has it by default. It could work differently depending on the ROM though. For example, in my Samsung, typing say, "626" would give me suggestions based on the alphanumeric equivalents (like "MAMa", "Avegail MANalo", "Mon MANcilla"), as well as numbers with the combination of "626" within it, like +6391626******.
 
I guess I'll come back after I get a new phone.

Can you make the overall font bigger in the new OS's?

This is the reason I had mine hacked so I could get software that would do this :(

Total pain to get something that should be there by default.
