avg free

Hi, I downloaded avg free 3 days ago.
Since then, the second i turn my phone, o2 charges me

Uninstall the antivirus app, it is not needed.

Are there not threats on the internet via mobile that I should be worried about?
I would gladly uninstall avg if there is no need for it.

There are a few trojans that have been found and removed from the market - but AVG (nor any of the other AV apps) didn't find them...users did.

The best security is a smart user.

Yes uninstall it. Just be smart as to what you install. You see permissions of apps you download from the market, make sure they do not access stuff they shouldn't. It makes sense for a SMS app to access your contacts and text messages. It does not make sense for a live wallpaper to access your contact info. All an antivirus app will do for you is drain battery, use data, and tell you what permission an app you install use just like the market does.

thanks for your replys, i follwed the link in angryhatter post, it was very helpful, i have been checking permissions before downloading apps but was not sure what was really needed, i have a better idea now.

well. i uninstalled avg last night but as soon i switched phone on this morning o2 whipped another

First I would say get of the pay-as-you-go thing.

Do you have wifi to connect to?

Uncheck 'Background data' and 'Auto-sync' from Settings>Accounts & Sync.

That is, if you have the same options as I do.

Cheers ambientdroid, that works, but i am going to change tariff and get a bolt on, no point having a smart phone if you cant use all its potential!

Yea I agree, I'm just lucky enough to be somewhere that unlimited data is reasonably affordable.

Perhaps put the 'packet' widget on your home screen so you can toggle your data connection as well.

You can use Lookout, it has a finder if you ever lose your phone and it automatically backs up some data, other than that anti-virus apps aren't necessary.

I've had a couple of issues with Lookout (see this thread that I posted: http://androidforums.com/android-ap...ut-locate-feature-unreliable-outside-u-s.html).

Basically the finder doesn't work in many countries outside the U.S, the backup on the free version only saves your contacts - which you can easily sync to gmail anyway, and the anitvirus is unnecessary.

It could be worth it for the locate missing device feature if you live in the US.
