avoiding charges traveling internationally

I'll be traveling in Europe and plan to take my HTC One so that I can use the WiFi capabilities for email/text/calling using Talkatone or other free WiFi based apps. I know that I can put the phone on Airplane mode with WiFi on get this functionality, but I'm wondering whether this is the best method of avoiding roaming charges or if there are other options. I'm also curious to know whether i can change the SIM card when I arrive in Europe and pay lower calling rates if I wish to use the cell network. I'm also open to other reasonable options to avoid additional charges from my carrier (Verizon). Thanks in advance for any idea, recommendations and advice -

As far as getting the GSM SIM-unlocked by Verizon, you stand a 50-50 chance, since you want it for use outside the country. You have to do that before you can use any SIM other than theirs. If they won't do it, you can try the "unlock code sellers" on eBay Otherwise you're stuck on wifi.

They wont give you the code if your a 4g LTE contract . this is cause you have a contract with Verizon and they will hit you with a early termination fee . and then charge you for unlocking . if you paying on device this can be a pretty heathy bill. Now when your contract ends they may help .
