Help Azpenpc tablet

biyahero

Lurker
I have an azpenpc tablet Model A1045DRI which has Android 4.2.2 installed on it. I would like to update it to the latest possible version and install some Android games on it for a young child. I have gone to the About part of settings, and there is no choice to upgrade or update.

I can connect to WiFi with it, but that is about all I can do.

Maybe among other things I might need to access a command line to do some things with it, but I don't know how to do that. If does have a USB mini or micro receptacle on the side of it, as well as a receptacle marked "Micro SD" which I could use to perhaps use to install some app?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The latest version is 4.2.2 from the manufacturer.
Unless there's a custom rom out there your stuck.
Sad to say, but ^^^that is correct. Honestly, the hardware is probably too outdated to run any modern apps well even if you could get it updated. :(

For a cheap, decent tablet for a child I would look at the Amazon Kindle Fire line. They are pretty cheap but being from Amazon there are accessories (hardened cases for rough and tumble kids) and support, and you can install Google Play in a few short steps.

Well thanks for the information. It's sad that unless I could find a custom rom to make it possible to update Android I'll end up just tossing it, as well as surprising that it was only obtained in December 2017 so I would have expected that it would have some usability, being only less than 2 years old!

The Manufacturer tells me that "That tablet is a custom made tablet for Diamond Resorts and there are no Android updates for it."

I had believed earlier that this Diamond Resorts had made some files read only as it is designed to make bookings on their scam time share "vacation" offerings, so I had hoped that if there was a way to get to a command line (which some information on this forum seemed to indicate was possible from as program on a connected USB flash drive or Micro SD Card) that I could make all files readable and deletable, and thus cause it to become a tablet which I could format to make blank and install whatever version of Android.

Apparently this is not the case and I am wrong about that idea?

I am very much a novice and ignoramus when it comes to Android, although I am pretty much proficient with Windows, OS/X and IOS and have some basic knowledge of Unix from years ago in college.

As for the suggestion about the Kindle Fire, thank you for the suggestion, but it is not my child .... I just end up being her mother's (a distant relative) tech support, Maybe someday when it gets older that would be a suggestion to consider.

The child's mother has no money and the child is less than 1 year old so it would be happy with any kind of basic animation display ... wouldn't have to be a very involved game, or even one that would accept input from the user... just like cartoon display for example.

So it sounds like the bottom line is I would need to find either a command line program that could be run from Micro SD Card or a USB Flash Drive to make all files readable and and deletable so I could format it AND a ROM that could be installed on it somehow to make this thing useable at all, and otherwise I should just commit it to the trash?

Is that correct?

Thanks for your advice and help!!

prequel: I answered your post sequentially, but some of the most important answers are towards the end. I think your tablet may be useable as is for your needs. :)

Devices running 4.4.2 were pratty long in the tooth by 2017, so this was probably underspec'd even when new. :(

While there is a command line utilites via adb, in order to actually accomplish anything, you would need:
  • administrative access to the device which would require an unlocked bootloader
  • root
  • the device drivers for the hardware
  • a custom rom built using the drivers built specifically for that device
It sounds like these were customized already, to there is probably hardware in the customer (Diamond Resorts) specs that have no drives.

No worries, I only know enough under the hood to get in trouble. Android in build on linux, so like unix. But like any OS, it needs to know how to interact with the hardware, and that's where the drivers come it. Additionally, it must have enough CPU / GPU / Memory / Storage to perform the tasks at hand. Since these were customized to be a one trick pony there is a high likelyhood they scrimped on the hardware since gaming wasn't part of the deal.

I have one for myself and for my child. If you get to that point someday, hit me up here and I'll get you the steps for her.

Now were talking!!!! <---in red in so you don't lose it in this wall of text. :) One year olds like colors and shapes, and my god an app my 12 year old son played on my first Droid (circa 2009) is still available in play.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marcone.toddlerlock&hl=en_US

It should run fine on something like that, it engages toddlers curiosity. Give it a whirl. Play may further recommend apps, try them and see what runs and what doesn't. A one year old isn't going to complain about lag.

No, if it boots and has play, you should be good. Do a factory data reset to erase all the non system junk. This will return it to out of the box condition. Set it up with a Google account. I have a phone still running android 4.4.2 (wifi only) and i can install apps on it.

YES! Thank you so much!! It does run that app you mentioned. So your suggestions kept my from throwing it away, and I think it will be useful enough for the child!

Play did claim that several several other apps were compatible with "your device'. So I downloaded Pou, Peppa Paintbox, ABC Kids, and Candy Crush Saga (which Play claims to be compatible), but runs really really slow. I don't know how to play it, but if if does something the child might like it, or I may uninstall it.

Pou sort of works, at least it displays different things when you take some action...t appears that you have to take some actions to acquire points for it to fully work, but it may work good enough for the child to see movement and colors.

I spent pretty much the whole day working on this device yesterday, and it appeas that it has Internal Storage of (used 0.94GB and Free 2.0 GB) When I go go the Apps folder it shows the apps I downloaded and there are choices if I select an app to "Move to SD Card" or in some cases to "Move to Tablet" For example if I select ABC Kids I have choices presented of "Move to Tablet" or "Clear Data" and if I select Candy Crush Saga the choices are "Move to SD Card" or "Clear Data". So I am unsure what the difference is ... in one case might it be trying to run the game over WiFi rather from the device, or whether it would run better if you had it on the Internal SD card or if you "Moved it to the Tablet"?

My wife just showed me how it is supposed to work ... you sort of swipe between the symbols that are jumping, which doesn't work, but it does play music and have the colored shapes so maybe it will be adequate.

There are several more apps that do run ... at first I thought they didn't but you just need to figure out how to quit one module to be able to choose the next module, which is done in a non-standard way by dragging the X at the top right to the top left in the app.

So Baby Games, ABC Kids, Colors and Shapes, and 123 Numbers all from RV App Studios all work fine.

It appears that there is a built in "SD Card" because if I go to the File Manager app, I see sdcard "with 15 items -drw"
and then there is another selection calling itself "External SD Card", which I guess if I inserted one in the socket I would have more available storage. Then there is another selection for "USB" and there is a Micro-USB socket on the tablet. Then there is an "Image" with some images in it mostly consisting of screenshots which show sizes and "-rw" next to them. I would like to erase them but I don't see how. If I select one it just opens it.

There is also an empty "Video" directory.

So I think I still have a lot of work to do, but thanks to your suggestions I think this tablet can so what is needed.

There is a display sometimes at the upper part of the display where there are folder looking icons with a checkmark in them and another like an underline with a checkmark... so I need to figure out what that means ... perhaps running items if I find it again I'll take a picture of it. At one point I rebooted and got a warning dialog that all my third party apps would be disabled if I did that, but they all still seem to run after I rebooted.

Move to card just means where most of the app and data will be stored, so like you mentioned a little later, you can install more apps. Not all apps can be moved to external storage. Clear data just erases the app data, returning it to a "just installed" state. Think logins and game save data.

As far as some of the old images, download a file manager like xplore and you can find and delete them. If you don't have root (admin priviledges) you won't be able to delete anything critical, but it is always better to ask.

Could you please advise me where ro find xplore to download it? I can't seem to find it...
