Help Background data sync..need help

Hi,
I noticed that turning off background data sync does save a lot of battery. But i do not get notification from google because of this feature being turned off. All I want to know is whether there is any way to sync data at particular intervals like say every 4 hours or so.

manually turn it on and off, no other option!
