Background processes

Ok, so I love my new HTC Hero, but how can I stop apps i do not use from running in the background? I have installed an auto process killer, but it too is yet another running app.
My wife and I have the same phone, she never shuts hers off so it get so CPU taxed that sometimes she can't even slide the screen to answer a call.

So for example, if i open the yellow pages app to look for something, and then close it, why is it still running in the BG? Is there some way to stop these apps from doing this?

The more the merrier I installed Advance Task Killer, the free version since I do not see any difference other than ads do not appear in the paid version. It is here Android Tapp. Android App Reviews, Android Apps, News, Ratings, Interviews & Showcase

Here is something you might want to read; the question of using task killers is one that often comes up:

It doesn't hurt to reboot your phone once in a while as well.

In Android, just because an app is listed as Active doesn't necessarily mean it's using resources, as one might expect with Windows.

1) I turn my phone off every night, so rebooting is not an issue.
2) I AM the "techie" that the article speaks about, I have been an IT professional for over 15 years, I work for local government as a systems admin. So if I decide a task killer is a good idea, it's because I have done research. This thread is part of that research.
3) The article basically says to never use a task killer, yet gives a recommended download for an app "systemPanel" which is basically a manual task killer.
4) The article says using a task killer does NOT speed up the phone, this is completely incorrect. With a second app that i use, I can see the cpu usage go down as I kill apps, and the phone then begins responding much faster and smoother.
5) The article says that closing running processes does not improve battery life. That depends on the process. For example, if you leave pandora running all day, it will most definitely kill your battery faster. But native processes such as people, dialer, etc do not have the same effect. I am not looking to extend a charge, I just want the phone to respond when i tell it to.

My wife, who is not techie at all, is about to return the phonne because of the jittery response it has when she tries to answer an incoming call. Granted she never turns hers off, but the advanced task killer set to automatically kill the apps i tell it to, will and DOES definitely take care of the issue.

I started this thread thinking that there must be a way to tell the phone that I don't use "stocks" and other apps, so please do not start them unless I do it manually. Since there seems to be no native way of doing so, the advanced task killer looks like the best option.
