Help Backing Up a Galaxy S that is not working

Recently My Samsung Galaxy S 1 has had some software issues that the phone will Go to the "S" and will stay there for 5-15 minutes and then restart On the "S". With that problem i need to get it fixed but i have photos and other files that i want to take off to back-up so i don't loose them but i can't access them on my Computer. Is there any way you can help me Back-up the files Thanks.Also Kies does not work with Backing it up. The Galaxy S is running Android 2.3

If you are unable to boot the phone normally then you won't be able to retrieve the photo's.
You could try going into recovery mode and performing a Wipe data/Factory restore to see if the phone boots normally again. This will not delete your photos as long as they are stored on the internal SD storage. To enter recovery mode press Volume UP + Home + Power button and wait for the Galaxy logo to appear then release. You can use the volume keys to navigate and the Home key to select.
There is a way for you to repair the phone yourself by flashing a firmware using Odin so you can boot the phone normally and retrieve the pictures. The procedure is quite simple and safe to do (if you've never done it before) and will preserve the photos as long as they are on the internal SD storage and not on the internal phone storage.

Of course, if you take it to Samsung for repair they will probably just flash a new firmware for you but they might reformat the internal SD storage which will wipe out your photos.

2 things one you said repair the phone by getting firmware using Odin where do you get the firmware. secondly with performing a Wipe data/Factory restore on my phone when you press it, it comes up with "Yes -- delete all user data" but will that delete all data or just the internal phone storage

The firmware files can be obtained from SamMobile Firmware Page. You can also find Odin and tutorials there too.

The wipe data/factory reset will only wipe the phones internal 2 gig storage and will not touch the internal SD card storage. That will remain intact, so you won't lose your photos (assuming that is where they are stored).

Hi Thanks for the information. with the firmware files off that website i had a look and there was none for Australia. Is there any firmware files for Australia on that website or any others

Hello,

I have a similar problem (my phone won't go past the "Galaxy S" logo and just flashes on and off), and I was wondering how you do this? My phone doesn't do anything when I try to use recovery mode, however it appears download mode still works. Is it true you can somehow recover pictures? I don't care if I can no longer use the phone, I would just really like to extract the pictures and videos stored on the internal SD.

Any help greatly appreciated, thank you.
