Backing up my pictures

I have been using the google photos app to back up my pictures (On my GS4) however its seems like if i delete the photos from my phone they get deleted from the backup as well. I do not want that to happen. Should I be using Dropbox instead? Thanks for any advice.
 
Not sure, I did not know they would get deleted, you can use DB, but you can also turn sync off and simply sync when you want. I will have to test that to see. I know stuff on my Drive will get deleted if I manually delete from the Drive app.
 
Very strange - I just checked on Google+ and it has the photos and videos I deleted from my phone ..

Maybe it's the phone. I'm have a Nexus 4 and I don't see any relevant setting on the Google+ settings page: could it be something on your S4?
