Backup/restore app for non-rooted phones?

What apps will backup/restore app data/settings on devices without root?

Everything I've found points to Helium. But Helium no longer works after the latest nougat/7 release. Even though phone is set to PTP, Helium thinks is still MTP and stalls. Helium support is not responding so looks like Helium is no longer an option ... for anyone.

So, what other app will utilize ADP/PTP to backup app data/settings?

Helium requires PTP. But does not 'recognize' the USB configuration is PTP since the latest release of Android. I have tested 3 models of Samsung phones and Helium no longer works on any of them.

I'm looking for an alternate app that backs up app data/settings for a device without root.

That sounds like Samsung have borked something then, rather than an Android problem. The distinction may not matter to you, but might to others who may read this thread.

I'm afraid I don't have an alternative. I don't suppose Samsung's Smart Switch software can do this?

I use a combination of Super Backup Pro, a file manager and Google Photos, and I'm not rooted
