how can i transfer my text messages to a new phone or copy them to a computer and use the wire to move them? i can save to simcard but the next phone came with a new one... is there some way to do this manually myself without taking it to a store

anything that does't require a 3rd party app?(especially that one, its permissions hell)

also i already have a new phone, so was hoping there was a way to do this without the thing being connected to a network

Nope, you're going to need a third party app and you're going to need permissions hell because you're trying to extract private data attached directly to your identity.

There are many sms backups, the one I linked can be trusted, the dev was possibly the first to do it and I've used it myself.

The no network option is -

Check out "Helium - App Sync and Backup"

Permissions hell again, same reason, but again, highly trusted dev, safe to use.

huh, helium isn't showing in my old phone's app store (android mytouch)

edit- also is there a way to only transfer some of it or is it a total bulk thing that i'll have to delete the rest?

could...i just save them to sim, move the old simcard to the new phone, move text off simcard and then swap it back to the sim that belongs to the new phone? or will that trigger some sort of antitheft thing and brick me(or break things some other way)? i know next to nothing about computers...

...i assume that is not something i can do and shouldnt attempt it
