Ballmer: iPhone has "no chance" of gaining significant market share

USA Today has an interview up with Steve Ballmer that touches on a number of interesting topics, including the CEO's perception of the iPhone and its chances of long-term success.

"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance," said Ballmer. "It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get."

Would you agree?

Sinse Ballmer took over, I don't think he has been right about one single thing. He's been screwing the company up and should have been fired long ago. He's done nothing in his life except ride Bill Gates' coattails.

Ironic that they'll have no DVD support... how exactly are the consumers going to upgrade their Win7 to Win8 ? ;)

Maybe the Mac way with an online download.... but I can see that blowing up in MS's face....

That quote was made over 5 years ago in 2007 right after the first keynote.

No one had any idea that the iPhone back then would flip the phone industry on its head.

Nokia ,blackberry and Motorola were king of the roost back then.

Ballmer hasn't made any silly comments like that since then.

Media DVDs, not DVDs in general. The DVD codec requires licensing that apparently MS doesn't want to pay.

Bwahahahahaha

Also, just download VLC. How many people watch DVDs on their computer using Microsoft's native player anyway?

There will be an "Windows Media addon package" which will "enable DVD" support . .
 You mean "linux"?

Hmmm.... This seems ... logical? Not quite to me, as someone who often watches DVDs. But, I guess it'll save them a bit on each copy they sell....
I think I probably felt the same about mac when they started cutting optical drives and launched their OS via digital download. But not including the software for dvds almost seems - lazy? cheap? I don't know, not really a fan of that choice.

But to stay on topic, I guess it's really just one of those hindsight is 20/20 situations. I mean, if I'd have known that apple would have launched the ipod and iphone, I'd probably have invested in them and be very comfortable on my private jet right now ;)
*shrugs*
 I bet he'd have a pretty sour response if someone brought up that quote to him now though :D

I think he was unaware of how the market would be. Within business circles he is much closer to being right than he was to make a general statement like that. He must not have thought that average joes would want a gadget like this.

Cheap .No. Capitalistic .Yes.Clever . Definitely .
Like I said DVD playback is available as an "addon" or "upgrade"
Windows 8 Dumps Default DVD Playback | PCWorld

Lets say they sell Windows Basic/Starter or whatever they come up with at Nominal Rate .
Then they ask you to add an upgrade pack .
People get "choice"
On top of that ,they can put a time limit for such "service"

Poor guy - hasn't had a very good compensation package after the stuff he's constantly told Wall Street about what MS would accomplish.

I think any day he gets from breakfast to dinner without making silly comments is a new personal best for him.
