I've done a little themeing with just 3rd party launchers and such. Folder organizer or desktop visualizer also help with creating different looks. As far as a guide I found a few links that may help get you going in the right direction:

You can also find basic tutorials in Youtube. There are so many videos there that can help you out. I used to watch videos on Youtube when it comes to tutorials and stuff.
the designer had uploaded the icons and such, but i think because of the resolution of my device (i'm currently using a rooted kindle fire), it looked kind of messy, and some of the icons didn't show up...
i also want a good calendar widget that i can display on my home screen that can also sync with astrid and google calendar...
The only Calendar Widget I have been able to find that syncs with Astrid is Android Agenda. And its not exactly a calendar since it only shows agenda view.
