If the screen says anything at all then the battery is not dead.
It sounds like you've booted into recovery mode to me (see this thread, where someone had a similar problem). I'm not familiar with the S4, so don't know what combination of buttons would be needed to get into this mode, but most likely you've just pressed a few buttons together to get into this state. A simple way out would just be to remove the battery, then reinsert and reboot the phone.
If it goes back into this mode when you do that, please post again or consider joining so that you can post in the main forum, because that would suggest that there is something wrong. But I expect that it will just boot normally if you force it to restart this way.
