I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with Telus. I lose cell signal when I am in my building's underground parkade and when I am in the train tunnel on my way to and from work. The signal re-acquires when I get above ground but it seems that the phone continues grinding away searching for a signal even after it has re-acquired one and drains the battery in a few hours. I sometimes remember to put the phone in Flight Mode before I go into these areas but that is a pain. Is there a setting in the phone that I can turn off to stop the phone from draining the battery in this instance?

This is an odd one. When the phone finds a signal that should be it. Of course if it's in a region of weak signal, especially if it's dropping in and out, then sure it will use a lot of power. But I've never heard if it still scanning when it regains solid coverage.

The only thing I can think of is to look for available networks and select your one by name, rather than letting it choose automatically, and see whether that makes a difference.
