Battery Drain: Android OS > Mobile Radio Active

Newbie
Hi all, I just upgraded to the One M9 this past weekend, so far it's great, and incredibly fast. Only problem is battery life. I upgraded the system software to android 5.0.1 (maybe that was a mistake?) and the battery is draining really fast. By around 6 or 7 PM I'm at about 10 or 20% battery life left, if I'm careful.

Looking at Usage Manager, it looks like Android OS > Mobile Radio Active is a culprit.

I'm no expert on Android, I have no idea what this mobile radio thing is. I read a long bug report on google (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=165558) and it seems like I'm not the only one with this problem.

Anyway, my question is - can I just disable this radio thing? Whatever it is, I don't think I'm using it..

I'm on AT&T if that means anything..

Try wiping the cache partition:
To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Power button
  2. Tap Power off.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Down key.
  4. Press and release the Power key to turn the phone on.
  5. Continue holding the Volume Down key.
  6. Release the Volume Down key when the black screen with red and blue lines of text appears.
  7. Press Volume Down two times to highlight reboot to bootloader.
  8. Press the Power key to select reboot to bootloader.
  9. When the white bootloader screen appears, press the Volume Down key two times to highlight BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE.
  10. Press the Power key to select BOOT TO RECOVERY MODE.
  11. When another black screen with red and blue text appears, press Volume Down three times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  12. Press the Power key to select wipe cache partition.
  13. Once complete, press the Power key again to select reboot system now.

Once you re-boot,it's gonna take a while for all of your apps to reload (for lack of a better word,no worry,no data at all will be lost).
It wouldn't hurt to place the phone next to a small fan while the apps are initializing (there's the word I was looking for). ;)
The temperature won't hurt the phone, but, some are alarmed at the heat generated when this initializing takes place.
I do this frequently,as I am rooted/ROMMED & updates are more frequent from the ROM developer,so,I take the extra precaution of keeping the phone cool.

Do not place the phone in the refrigerator/freezer to keep it cool, the resulting condensation has a good chance of shorting out your phone & in-turn causing permanent damage.

Thanks Kolio - actually it didn't really take long at all to do the reboot, and didn't seem to do anything special as far as apps go. I admit I wasn't watching, but I put the phone down after clickng the "reboot system now" option, and looked again 5 minutes later and it was up and running. I hope I did it right?

I'll charge it overnight tonight and keep a close eye on it tomorrow.

That was pretty cool, I've never gone into all of those screens before. So are you running a custom rom? I was hoping cynagenmod might have a stable release (never did CM before either) but it seems like even CM has this same bug right now, so that might not fix it either.

I'm sure you got it right,I'm probably impatient (a watched pot seemingly never boils).;)
Sounds like you breezed right through the process. :thumbsupdroid:
I haven't ever ran Cyanogenmod on an HTC device (HUAWEI/OPPO/OnePLUS),& the last CM ROM I ran was CM11 & it was a nice stable ROM.
I take that back,I did try out CM12 on the Note 4 I believe,didn't care for it.Not buggy,just liked CM11 better.

Anyhoo,I Strongly recommend one excellent Sense ROM:

looks cool!!!!! I'm going to check it out, especially if this battery drain thing doesn't go away :)

If you've never rooted/ROMMED an HTC Device, take a look around & get familiarized w/the process.
Each mfgs methodology is different from others,it's well worth the time to check things out 1st.
Sounds like you're tech savvy (definitely more so than yours truly, safe to say) ;),shouldn't be too daunting.

I'd give our HTC ONE M9 Root section a look:

Feel free to ask around if you have any questions,or,follow some of the links there to XDA-Developers.

thanks again, I will! Yea I'm a web developer so I'm a little capable, but not too confident in this realm honestly. I did manage to root my first android phone, but only because I found some chinese root program that probably installed some sort of china spy software at the same time lol

I do like the idea of a custom rom though. My phone doesn't seem to have a lot of bloatware, but still, if I can fix this battery drain I'm all for it. There's nothing I hate more than worrying whether my battery will die on me if I'm not near a charger in 3 hours or whatever

Check You-Tube for an idea of what's involved.
You'll likely want to get S-Off on the M9 as well.
In a nutshell,S-OFF gives access to all partitions & despite the name, actually makes things safer/easier along the process.

I'll now leave the discussion of these things to those better versed in the matter(s).
