Help Battery Drain in S6

xfrostyx

Lurker
Hey all. Im an Android newbie, the S6 being my first Android phone. Ive been really unhappy with the battery life so far. I've had it since launch day and so far I haven't gotten more than an hour and a half of actual use out of the battery. I constantly have to charge it while Im at work. I'm on Wifi at home and at work. Is this what to expect with Android, or Samsung, or is it a bad battery? I notice that in the battery settings the phone considers "usage" as the time since it's unplugged, whereas the iPhone counts usage time the time you're actually using it. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks. This was my battery today. Its pretty much the same every day.

I'm not sure what you mean that I keep my phone plugged in intermittently. The usage I posted was from a day that it was unplugged and run down to about 10% before I plugged it in. I didn't charge it at all during that day. The google play services is always in the top two. I figured out the Google Play services is related to my Google photo backup, but I have it set to only backup on WiFi when charging, so I didn't think it should make an impact since it's not running.

I might have misunderstood, but you indicated in your message that your phone drains within one and half hours off a full charge. The screenshot indicates over 11 hours of usage since the full charge.

Sorry, I said the wrong thing. What I meant was the time I'm actually using it is less than an hour and a half. The 11 hours is the time since I've taken it off the charger. I'm coming from an iPhone which catagorized time in "usage" and "standby", so to me usage is only the time I'm actively using it.

OK so we do the same thing but in our terms we care more about "sleep" and "awake" because that's how we troubleshoot battery issues.

Awake refers to the processor being active - ideally when the screen is off the phone ought to sleep and wake only to perform expected tasks, such as scheduled email checks or other updates.

In such cases the phone ought to show no battery consumption to speak of - analogous to your old phone being on standby. The only place on your graph where I see a hints of that is the period after 12 where it started to level out some, and maybe a little at a few other times.

Check out "GSam Battery Monitor"

Most of us rely on that because it's better than the built-in versions and lets us standardize analysis and comparisons.

Here's an example of what a properly behaving phone might look like, no real battery drain with screen off and known events waking the phone but not holding it awake -

An hour and a half of use and dead after eleven hours isn't ok and ought to be corrected, either by user actions or by replacements.

You shouldn't have to baby your phone for battery usage and above all, don't install anything that promises to manage tasks, clear ram, or extend your battery life. Despite being the big sellers on the Play Store, all of those things are garbage and actually eat up your battery, lie about it, and try to induce you to buy more.

Most cases like yours have simple solutions.

Try GSam, pay special attention to the Phone Signal (bad reception will eat a battery like a kid after candy) and Others tabs on the graphics, and UNLIKE my quick and dirty example, it's often helpful to hold your phone sideways in landscape mode for more revealing graphics.

Notice that GSam can try to report time awake as well as CPU time and percent in the apps listing.

Welcome to the forums and Android! :)
