Help Battery drain using wifi

Recently I've noticed my s3's battery draining more when connected to wifi. There are issues with it not connecting straight away, spending a long time 'authenticating' before it connects.
If I look at battery in settings I can see that while connected to wifi, the phone never sleeps, whereas when connected to data only, it does. Any ideas?

Not sure...all i know though is im sort of irritated that ive spent the money on this phone, which is the best phone I ever paid for....yet when its off its using up my battery. That is so backwards i just cant even begin.

Juicedefender for the first day or so seemed to really help retain my battery. Then this morning on my day off here, i disconnected my phone from an all night charge and went back to sleep a bit. I got up in about an hour and the phone was down to 86%.
