Help Battery drains out on Galaxy 3

bondowen

Newbie
Its been under few weeks that I bought Samsung Galaxy S3.

I have tried many techniques like enabling power saving, turning off wifi when driving, turning off mobile data and blue tooth while driving, but yet my battery dont last me more than half a day.

I do use it moderately, like surfing web, chatting, etc but no games or photo editing or whatsoever.

Can anyone advise me if it is a device problem or is this an expected performance from S3?

some things I could suggest that I didn't see listed are what about screen brightness?

auto sync turned off so it doesn't go looking/checking for new emails, etc?

if you want to go ultra hyper mile on the battery charge turn on airplane mode just be wary you won't get any calls/msgs while in this mode

the only thing I'm not sure of when you say you turn things like blue tooth, wifi etc is how long are you turning them off? are you consistent?

start with the bare minimum and observe how the battery lasts then if satisfied slowly enable one feature at a time.

I charged my S3 before I went to bed last night.
When I got into bed it was 12.30 & the battery was on 99%.
I long pressed the middle button and cancelled everything that was running, I also knocked off wifi & mobile data.
When I got up this morning at 10.30 it had used only 2% of the battery in 10 hours leaving me on 97% for the day.
In almost 10 hours since then I've made 2 hours worth of calls, read around 15 emails, sent & recieved half a dozen texts, been on facebook, twitter & used the net a good 20 times & also played half an hour of music on full volume through the speaker.
My battery is now on 59%.

If I'd done all of that on my HTC Desire or Sensation XE I'd have probably had to charge again by now.
Personally I cannot believe how good the battery life is on the S3.

charliehowes......Is your Sync Enabled all the time?

That's one feature that I missed out on. I am gonna try that and see.....

About the wifi:
I keep it on pretty much for the entire day. Its only during my commute that I disable wifi. So I'd say wifi is enabled for 22-23 hours of the day.

Bluetooth:
I have now started disabling it for the entire time. I enable it only while driving. So it is inverse of of my wifi settings.

Mobile data is something that I keep turned off for most of the time.

I disabled the sync from the notification bar on the top and I notice that my battery life has been better. Thanks to your suggestions.I will be observing it moreand I hope I don't have to come back and post again on this thread.

I use JuiceDefender and yesterday I tested my battery life (for another similar thread), and after 24 hours I was on 45%, so I would expect two day's use. It included three hours music listening, a fair bit of photography, calls and texts.

Forgot to add: a bit of web browsing too.

Do you have the paid version of juice version or is free version enough?

I'll give it a shot and see if it helps.

Hrmm, my battery seems to last me quite a good amount of time..

I think perhaps you have too high expectations of what a battery should last on a smartphone like this?

My sister owns an HTC, her battery lasts around 4-6 hours, at the most.. I am being serious..

Usually, I'll wake up at 6 am, unplug my phone and check my emails, by the time I leave home at 7:30 my battery is almost full.. I probably end up having to recharge it at around 6pm.. but if you think about it, that is almost if not more than 12 hours of usage on a phone that has an incredibly huge screen and runs dozens of processes all day long.

Dim screen, disable wifi search, disable the feedback thing (i forget the name), also disable touch noises and the motion sensor and you should get just about as much life out of the battery as it can give, unless you got a faulty battery pack?

Hi you may wanna try to disable wifi and use mobile data instead, see if it makes any difference. I notice my home wifi draining my phone battery like crazy, when I'm in office I use office wifi and no problem with that, only when I get home, I notice a significant drain on battery, so I switch to mobile data, and now my battery life is good again.

Not sure why the wifi can cause such a problem, I've tried to changed different setting on my router but saw no improvement, so I will have to rely on mobile data at home before I get a new router.

Oh ya, I used to lose 4~5% of battery with the phone just connected to my home wifi doing nothing at all, and it's kinda crazy.

If one disables the sync from the notification bar, what exactly no longer syncs?

I believe the accounts you have set up, like your google account, etc..

If you add a contact to your google account via your computer, it should automatically sync with your phone directory. If that sync button is disabled, I believe contacts won't sync automatically..

Not 100% sure though.

Does turning off 4g LTE help battery life? Or not any appreciable amount?

I don't have the phone yet, is this option even in the settings like with my Rezound?

Yeah mate Sync is always enabled.

Wifi is switched off when I go to bed and then switched back on within minutes of waking up, usually switched on around 14 - 16 hours per day.

Bluetooth is something I never use.
