Help battery issues since installing 6.0.1...?

Hi All, I have a 2 year old Nexus 5 that has never been rooted. Maybe its a coincidence, but since I installed 6.0.1 my battery is draining quickly and takes a long time to charge. Anyone else have this problem? If yes, is there a way to downgrade to 6.0? Some other way to fix this problem? Is there an app that can fix or mitigate battery issues like this? Thanks,

Did you take the OTA or did you flash a factory image?

Too many times OTA's leave a service or app in a semi-updated state and because of the cache or the recompile (or lack thereof) things get stuck in a constant-on state.

I'd recommend wiping the cache and possibly a factory reset. "Downgrading" means flashing old factory firmware, in which case you'd be better off flashing a clean version of 6.0.1 which probably would fix your problem.

I think I found the solution. Soon after I installed 6.0.1 I also turned off automatic updates for a bunch of the Google apps that I don't use. I did this to save bandwidth cuz its expensive here in India. Last night I turned automatic updates back on for the Google apps. Now my battery performance seems back to normal. Anyone else heard of this behavior? Thanks,

My guess is you turned off one of the essential Google Services by accident, which caused Android from being able to go into a sleep mode. It likely kept trying to get a response from the service you shut down.

You're probably right. Although I was careful to only turn off Google apps like Maps, Play, Music, Newsstand, Books, etc. I didn't mess with anything that looked like a "google services" app. I'm happy my battery is back to normal but I don't like all the bandwidth the updates use. I'll play around with Google apps one at a time to see which ones I can safely disable auto updates.

You can go into your data settings and try to turn off background data for those apps - that "should not" cause an issue like this.
Settings/data usage - Find the app in App usage section of that screen, and enable "restrict app background data"

Hello jj14x, Thanks for the info. I'm guessing that turning off background data for an app does not prevent that app from automatically updating itself? Is this true? Thanks,

"Updating itself" - do you mean the app being updated to the next version? (if so, no - that is controlled by the play store - you can change that auto-update in play store app settings).

Or do you mean automatically downloading new content - example mail app downloading new Email, or weather widget downloading latest forecast? (if so, yes, that is an example of the app using background data, which will be controlled by using this toggle)
