Battery Life issues linked to communication with network

Like many, I've had battery life issues with my skyrocket. I've noticed that sometimes my phone gets hot. The heating of the phone coincides with an icon appearing on the icon line that has the 4G with the little "wave" lines. Per the user manual this icon means: "Displays when the phone is communicating with the UTMS, HSDPA, HSPA, or HSPA+ network". When this occurs the battery drains very very fast.

Sometimes, the 4G will appear in the icon section without the "wave" sign and the phone will not get warm nor will the battery drain fast. In fact, it lasts a long time. Per the user manual the 4G icon without the "wave" sign means: "displays when your connection to a UTMS, HSDPA, HSPA, or HSPA+ network is active."

My question is does anyone know why the phone is communicating with the network when I am not using it thereby causing incredibly fast battery drain?

It doesn't always do it, only sometimes. When it does, the battery lasts only 3 or so hours. When not doing it, it lasts all day.

Thanks, Nick

Do you have GPS enabled? If yes, I doubt this could be the caused of the problem. Why, because.. I always have my GPS on, and I don't see my battery life any different than if I have it off. You may have an installed application causing this.

Thanks...I had GPS disabled. I didn't add any apps recently, so I don't know what would cause the constant "communication" with network. As I write this, the phone is not trying to "communicate" with the network. I don't know if it is because I went through all my apps that send/receive data and disabled any automatic updates or any automatic sending of any data.

This is my first droid phone. Came from Blackberry. I really like my skyrocket, but the data usage and the battery drain are major issues. I think I will use my phone like a computer and disable the data packet when I am not using the internet so that only the phone and text messaging works. If I need to check email or use an application that uses the internet i will turn on the data packet. That really increases the battery life dramatically. An important trick to know if you are going to be taking your phone where you are going to be away from a charging source for a long time and phone connection is critical.

I will advise if despite my changes the phone still tries to "communicate" constantly.

These droid phones obviously have a long way to go. They have so many issues, which obviously prompt sites such as this. If no issues, this site would not exist. That's the way a phone should be. Shouldn't be constantly thinking/stressing about it. Droid users are like eccentric mechanics constantly tinkering with their "machines" just to make them run right.

I may be switching to Iphone 5 if only it had an auto text/substitution and the memo function. That's the only reason I have this phone.
