Battery life/random reboot

Hey, I just gave my friend my old G1. He reset to factory default and formatted the SD card. After that, the phone dies within 15 minutes of coming off of a full charge. Sometimes it will reboot, but it doesn't last very long. Everything on the phone is stock, and it is running 1.6. Any ideas?
 
Might try doing the "battery recalibrate" procedure, but I'd guess the old batt is just dying. They are like $5 shipped off eBay.
 
Thanks for replying! I kind of figured a new battery might help. If he uses the phone at all, it dies in about five minutes. If he doesnt touch it, it lasts for a while.
