Help battery life with mp3s

I largely use my phone for mp3s. I also use it for watching videos I've downloaded. To me, it seems obvious that sound and video would suck the battery much faster than just sound. But, it seems like the opposite is the case. I wonder if this is some kind of configuration problem.

I need to be kind of picky about the apps I use for mp3s, because I mostly listen to audiobooks. I also use it as a teacher in the classroom. This means good bookmarks are important.

Mostly, I've used "Smart Audiobooks"(guess what for ;) ) and "MX Player"(for video).

That is very, very strange! Unless you've got the screen on while you listen to MP3s, I can't imagine how it can use as much as power as watching a video (when the screen has to be on).

I use the stock MP3 player and it uses relatively little battery.
