Battery Life

My battery life has been horrid lately, and I'm trying to figure out why. I have Gsam battery monitor, but all I can see is that the two biggest drainers are "Android System" and "Kernel". How can I find what is draining the battery?

I am on AT&T with Android version 8.0 and Samsung Experience version 9.0.

Did you recently update to 8 from 7? A lot of times we see issues where a process or service goes all cattywumpus (sorry for the technical jargon ;) ) with an update. When the Android System is the biggest consumer of battery power, it could mean that your wifi or mobile data connection is 'stuck' on. Many times, simply rebooting your phone will fix that. Sometimes you need to boot into recovery and clear the system cache, and if all else fails, backup all your data and factory reset.

I guess that depends on how you define "recently". I can't recall exactly when it updated but it's been at least a couple of weeks, I think? But I could be mis-remembering.

I have restarted the phone several times but have not cleared the caches. I'm really hoping to avoid a factory reset.

This is strange, and maybe worthy of it's own thread. When I try to boot into recovery mode I get a screen that says "installing system update" where it sits for a bit before bringing up some kind of error screen that says "no command". I'm able to get back into my phone by holding down the power button, but I never get into recovery mode.

I think that's a holdover from the system update. I've seen a few posts on other forums where you can get into recovery from the "no command" screen by pressing and holding power + vol. up + home for a few seconds. The "installing system update" is normal, it's just looking to see if there is a system update pending.

I can't take a screen shot of an error screen within the recovery mode, unless screen captures are somehow enabled in the recovery boot that I'm not aware of. I'd need another camera to take a picture of my phone or something.

The "Installing" screen is just a blue screen with an Android buy, and the "No Command" screen is the same blue but it looks like the Android guy has fallen over and there's a yellow filled triangle with an exclamation point in it.

All that said, I went through the process again and after the "No Command" screen this last time it did give me the recovery menu. Not sure what I did different.

Just wondering, that 'installing' message and yellow triangle sound more like you're in Download Mode, not Recovery Mode. To enter Download Mode on your S7E, you simultaneously press the Volume Down, the Home, and the Power buttons. To enter Recovery Mode, you simultaneously press the Volume Up, the Home, and Power Buttons.

So my battery performance is still abysmal, to the point where I'm down to 40% around noon most days. My wife has an S7 Edge and my daughter an S8 and they'veoth complaining about it for some time as well. Is there anything else I can check prior to a factory reset. I hate messing with that and I'm really skeptical that will help.
