Battery problem

Bentoix

Lurker
So the battery will charge to max 81%, even after overnight charge, when it reaches ~20% it will start to free fall, no matter what the use, it can only be charged when the phone is off, when it's on it actually acceleratingly starts to go down.
Then it's definitely empty, you can't turn the phone on. I tried calibrating and switching charger and cable but it doesn't change.
I think I've got a faulty battery but can't be sure if it's not software problem and I'd like some second opinions as I'm new to android.

I have a 2800mAh at 3.7V, 5" screen at min. brightness,3g off,no mobile internet and apps,android 4.2

Hello Bentoix. Welcome to Android Forums. :)

Here are the direct links to your images, unfortuantely the way dropbox handles these shared pictures, it's not possible to display them directly in the thread.

Based on your description and the images, I'd have to agree that the most likely problem is a bad battery. You didn't say which device you had, so I am guessing it's not got an easily replaceable battery in it. It could also be a problem with the charging circuitry and how it reads the battery voltage.

One thing I do notice is a good bit of power being used by the mobile radio. If you are in an area of weak signal, this could cause that, or if you use a good bit of mobile data and stream a lot of media, that could be the reason too.

dg500c, it's chinese brand but it's reputable. I got it 4 days ago so I'm thinking about returning it. Battery is removable and it's not bulging.

So the problem can't be in the phone? I could replace the battery but I want to save myself money and troubles if it still doesn't work.

It could be in the charging circuitry. Without have the device in my hands, there's no way to tell, unfortunately.

To be a little more encouraging that it's more likely the battery:

I've had this exact problem twice on different phones (Galaxy S1, and Galaxy S3mini), bot were fixed by a new battery.

I hope. I'm going for new battery because the phone is pretty good otherwise, but the battery is really weird, just today I had 20% for 15min then jump to 13% and rebooted to 83%???

Not likely the phone, because the charging circuit control chip is in the battery. Almost certainly the battery or possibly the charger. If you have another compatible charger try that. If not or doesn't help, try another battery.

Yeah to add more encouragement...a battery should definitely not be jumping around like that, even if the device is new and in the "calibration" stages.

I would definitely take it in and get it looked at.

Yeah, the phone generally uses the voltage to determine the percentage left.

Either return it or replace the battery, but either way do it soon - faulty batteries can be a hazard as well as an annoyance.

There are voltage drops when the percentages get screwed up so I think it's the battery, because the phone uses voltage and current to calculate the percentages, so if the voltage drops suddenly the percentage will too, so following from that it's unlikely SW or HW fault?

Just keep us updated, especially if the issue isn't fixed by a battery replacement :)

Glad we could help.
