Help Before Rooting

Emfolla

Newbie
Hello all,
I'm interested in rooting my samsung galaxy ace s5830i, android version 2.3.6 . But I'm a total noob at it. So, i will be following videos online. But i would like some information before rooting, so as to know which site would be safe.
If anyone of you could answer to my questions, It will be most appreciated.
1) Can you unroot your phone? ( I still am under warranty so i was just wondering if after rooting will i be able to unroot if something bad happens so that i can have my warranty)
***2) What are the things i should do before rooting? (Backups and anything else? I have heard of this titanium Backup app. Would it backup all my stuffs ? As i heard Rom manager would render my phone useless)
3) If something goes wrong during rooting would the backup i made be able to restore my device back to original? (I am stuck with this phone for another 20months)
4) What are the apps i would use for rooting?
5)What information would be required before rooting? ( Info such as android version etc)
6) What are the things i need to look out for specific to my phone ?
Any tips or helpful information about rooting would be most appreciated !

Use this tutorial
Root,Unroot,CWM,and how to Flash Galaxy Ace S5830i - xda-developers

1. Yes you can unroot your phone easily whenever you want.
2. There isn't much needed done before rooting because rooting doesn't actually cause much changes to the system files, it merely removes the access restrictions on it. Still if you want you can backup all your phone data and apps. Use MyBackup Pro or its free version from play store. You can also keep the stock firmware and files ready with you incase you have to flash the software again.(refer the tutorial for Odin)
3. Flashing stock firmware via Odin will restore your software completely. You can also flash whatever version of android you want from that.
4. You don't use any apps for rooting, the tut i gave has a rooting file, just place the file on the sd card and follow the steps. There is also a universal rooting method in the All things Root subsection here, you can also use that.
5. Rooting is the most safest thing to do, what you do after you have root access and are able to meddle with the system creates problem. Its usually the user mistakes that causes most of the problems, so its better to read as much as possible before attempting any procedure or modification, confirm it through various sources and reviews from other users.
You should know your android version and the region(check the settings>about phone> copy the android version and baseband version). All firmware files are sorted according to region and version, so if you need to use Odin, you must know what region and version you want it to flash on your phone.
6. Don't ever use any mod or any rom thats not made for your device. S5830 and S5830i are very different, don't ever think that the name is same so the phone is same. The app ROM Manager which is very common with root users is fatal to the ace and its variants, don't ever install it on your phone.

Rooting is no big deal, it just takes 5 seconds to root it. Just make sure to be careful with the apps that you grant root access afterwards. Even a small clumsy click can cause very big problems.
Make a backup of your entire software via ClockworkMod recovery after rooting and use Titanium backup to backup all apps and their data.

Thank you so much for your help, It was really great.
I would like to clarify with you though, So I would be using Odin if i would be flashing(restoring?) my device back to its original state?
But what is the difference with using the ClockworkMod recovery, titanium backup.
I'm confused with this.
Also, How do i be wary of granting root access from apps?
As in how would I know If it would be harmful to my device?
Do i just see comments or do i look for a specific thing ?

Odin is basically a software used to install the stock samsung firmwares onto the phone, so it can be used to just restore the software condition to samsung default whenever you want, you can use it incase of crashes, bootloops, or even if you just want to take the phone to service center under warranty.

CWM backup is a nandroid backup, it backs up your entire software as it is at the time of backup, whatever modifications or changes you do to the system will be backed up. This can be restored in case you do any irreversible modifications/mistakes and wish to return to previous condition.
Titanium Backup is only for apps and their data, although these are backed up in CWM backup also but if you wish to change your rom and don't want to install all your apps all over again, this can be quite useful. It also has some additional features also that are quite useful for a root user.

Well you need to be careful because the apps that you grant root access can harm your device if they want to, just like giving a virus free reign to your system, just make sure the apps you use are trusted apps produced by a recognised/reputed/trusted developer and has good reviews by other people.
Keep an eye on the permissions an app asks at the time of installation, if a normal game asks for you contacts, messages, accounts and credentials etc, that app is not to be trusted.
There are methods to stop these apps from these permissions while still be able to use the app, like there is PDroid patch for custom roms, you can manually select which permissions are to be granted and which are to be stopped, the CyanogenMod roms have an inbuilt feature for selective permissions etc.
