has anyone ever done this? or can it only be done through sprint directly. and in that case can you switch to it after getting a new contract through BB?

I think you have to sign up online. Not sure though.
It is only for new accounts so no, you cannot switch afterword.

you are better off getting a regular plan and adding an employee discount.
