Beijing XMas Gift

So my brother is going to be doing Study Abroad this summer through his University program. He is going to Singapore and Beijing. I know he's 6+ months away, but thought it would be fitting to get him some stuff in preparation for his trip.

My mom is already getting him Rosetta Stone so that's out. I thought I'd get him a Rick Steve's book for each location but that's not "fun" for a college student. Sooooooo I was thinking...

Does anybody know popular soccer or baseball jersey's for local Chinese players/teams? Something that Americans would probably never know but that would seem normal in Beijing or Singapore? I thought that'd be a fun/cool gift. Not useful but hey, I'm open to ideas!

Hi, I just got back from study abroad in Beijing over the summer. I can try to help.

Beijing gets hot like hell during the summer. The day I left the study abroad it was 116F and typical is mid 90s every day so I suggest getting him some good lightweight moisture wicking clothing (if you can find it this time of year, but if you can it might be on sale). If you want a jersey wait until you get the Beijing, you can get knockoffs for 5-10 US. I was there during the World Cup and only the foreigners were wearing anything soccer related. The Chinese LOVE basketball and they all play.

But don't get him anything big, bulky, or heavy for travel reasons. I suggest going half packed with just the essentials and buy extras overseas. That gives space for neat gifts for the family and yourself (your bro) plus you'll pay like 10% of what you'd pay at home. Just remember to haggle!!! The first price they give is inflated like 500% for westerners.

You mentioned basketball- do people wear BBall jerseys? Are they NBA jerseys or do they wear jerseys from Chinese basketball teams?

When I was in China I saw a decent amount of Yao Ming jerseys.. but I think an American wearing one there would seem a bit awkward, like he was trying too hard to fit in.

I think just a nice pea coat or jacket would be great.
