How does this actually work? Can you really upgrade to a new phone in 11 months? How many points would one have to have if upgrading from the Mesmerize to the Electrify?

This point system is very confusing.

The speed at which you can upgrade (accumulate belief points) depends on which level you're on. If you're on the low end plan, its about 17-18 months before you have enough points. If you're on the high end plan, its 10-12 months.

You can also purchase points to upgrade early, after a certain period of time. (Again, length of time before you can buy up depends on which level you're on)

Some things LaTuFu didn't mention is the amount of points you would have to use and/or earn. As he said, depending on the tier of a plan you're on will determine the amount of points you'll receive on the account every billing period. For instance, my plan has 6 phones on it resulting in 1000 points a month. For lowers tiers, you'll receive anywhere from 250-500 points a month.

To purchase lower the time it takes to upgrade your phone, you will need 1000 points per month you'd like to reduce. So if your upgrade is ready in May, and you have 5000 points on your account today, you'll be able to upgrade your phone in December (or November if you get enough points to put your account at 6000 points).

Another way to earn points is to sign up other people to the belief plan. Every person you sign up gives you 1000 points and gives them 1000 points.

Unfortunately, you can't transfer points due to the possiblity of abusing the system.

Another use of the points to to purchase accessories and even have overages charges waved.

Hope this helps!
