Best 2.1 Root Rom?

Okay so I'm going to be on my 3rd Eris later today and this time I've decided to root it.
The first one messed up when it started scrolling let for no apparent reason.
The second that I have now, wouldn't sync with facebook, so I did a factory reset and suddenly a lot of things didn't work anymore
The third I'm going to root.

My question is, what is the best ROM out there with 2.1 root? Or are they all pretty much the same?

Secondly, where might I find the best instructions to root?

I got like the last phone within 50 mile radius still running 1.5 so I really need some help since this is pretty much my last chance.

| GUIDES | ROMS | ROOTING | RECOVERY | RADIO'S | STICKIES | RULES - Read First - xda-developers

I definitely recommend going through that information to make sure you get the process down right. The most important step is making sure you have the correct 2.1 rom to flash first. If you flash the wrong one, then you won't be able to get root, and will be stuck with the leaked version. While it works, it does not allow for anywhere near the customization options. XDA is an excellent source for information and tutorials though, so if you go with those instructions then you should be fine. Most of the developers for various roms and what not hang out there. As far as the BEST rom, well, you can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you can't please all the people all the time. This holds true for this sort of thing especially. Most of the roms do a lot of the same things, but just focus on different ideas, like making sure it has this or that feature, more internal phone storage, or different themes. Once you root your phone, you'll just want to try a few different ones to see which caters to you the most. Once you root and have the recovery mode set up, then everything is easy. You can just reboot into recovery and flash different roms to see their different features. Find one you like, do a NAND back up and then you won't have to worry about losing your settings if you end up with a rom that you don't care for as much. Also recommended - Titanium Back Up so you can save all your apps while your switching back and forth between roms. Hope this helps...
