Hmm, best launcher eh? It's a matter of opinion, but I like Next Launcher. I've tried Nova but just didn't like it. I used to run TSF Shell Launcher but it hasn't been updated for quite a while, so I abandoned that one.
Try the suggestions listed so far and upcoming suggestions....one may suit you

I read that Apex was supposed to be having a big refresh after a couple of years without development. Has much changed?

(I always found Nova and Apex very similar, but Nova development was more active the last couple of years).
