Best android phone for gaming?

Nice to see the 2.2 nexus one is right up there, same hardware as my desire! Surprised to see the change from 2.1 to 2.2 make that much difference though! What app is that by the way, and what is it actually benchmarking? Just the CPU I assume?

Uses Snapdragon so it's never going to be the best for gaming..

Galaxy S with lag fix available from the market scores 2200 in that benchmark.

Heres mine..

Will be even higher when 2.2 is released.

I saw some dude get 2.1k on HD2.

Anyone can score 2000+ on quadrant because you can EASILY abuse the flaw in the I/O portion of the benchmark. From now on, I don't trust any score that doesn't come from quadrant pro (this version shows you how much of your score came from each part of the benchmark. Every phone scoring 2000+ is getting a huge amount from I/O.

Well thats hardly a flaw, I'd noted exactly where the score is coming from eariler in the post, it's using the lag fix!

No need for Pro version to tell us that.

I have the Galaxy S and is by far the best for gaming indeed but that Quadrant test has been exposed as VERY flawed...havent you guys seeing that 9K score as a test of this issue?
I score 2500 btw.
In any case, you want the current best, it is the Galaxy S.

Hi bmagsipoc,

Hmm,

I recall a device called the "ODROID" made by creative or somethin,
can't remeber now....... Oldtimers Foundation hahahaa i am getting slow! :)

It has a propper hardware keys specifically built for games but i don't know when or even if it will ever be released.

Here: ODROID in action, and what action it is! Specs, Reviews, News and Price Info - MobileWhack.com

And it looks like SonyEricsson will / maybe be developing an android device and will be the successor to the PSP. (This is a rumor only though....so don't know exactly dude)

Here: Sony PSP Android Phone To Take On iPhone 4G

And finnally there is the Zii Egg.... however, this is strictly for devs at the moment, I wanted 1 of these SO badly, but live in South Africa so i don't think i can get one here... sad actually cause it's a lovely piece of hardware.... :(

Zii.com

Oppsy, they have changed out the OS by the looks of the zii egg.... :(
Looks propreitary now...

Hope this clarifies your decision for ya.

Regards

Galaxy S, only phone that comes close is the Droid X,

If you like gaming, don't waste time with the current HTC range or the Nexus One, their high end devices all use snapdragon which is already outdated imo, soon to be replaced by higher clocked dual core versions with faster intergrated graphics.

Desire uses some version as the Nexus One, Galaxy S isnt included here but it was it would easily be faster than the Droid X.

I would say the Droid 2 comes close too since it has the same chips inside as the X. And The Droid 2 has a keyboard. Although I dont like the arrow keys setup on the Droid 2. I think the D Pad from the Droid 1 is probably better.

I agree with the Epic being the best right now, just for having that keyboard. I tried playing Tecmo Bowl for NES on my X....touch screen only controls suck ...lol (for certain games anyway...driving, flying and flying shooting games are probably fine..I played some Rad Racer for NES and it was ok.)

I dont need to use the Wiimote Controller cuz I have a Wii and just use the emulators on the Wii.

What yall think about that HTC Vision? That might take the place of the X and Droid 2 as being closest to matching the Galaxy S phones for best gaming phones.

The HTC vision is interesting. I definitely will keep an eye on that phone as more info is released! One thing is for sure. HTC is hungry and they are going to keep working to try to beat Samsung and Motorola now that they are putting some serious contenders on the shelves! Funny to think that just 8 months ago the Nexus one was the bad boy on the block.

Most people posting are simply looking at cpu/graphics speed as the determining factor of a gaming machine.... Some mention a physical keyboard.

For MANY games the Droid 1 D-pad is a huge benefit, and yes, the add-on game controller for the D1 is another big benefit.

As has been noted, Quadrant scores don't mean ALL that much but my rooted D1 runs 1500 on quadrant so they can move right along.

The D1 will always be hampered with the lack of a gpu chip that many of the newer phones have...but if you want convenient enjoyable gaming the keyboard/D-pad combo on the D1 is hard to beat...and you can find D1's for a very reasonable price without a contract...root them and have a VERY capable machine.

Cheers

:)

That D-pad is invaluable... but most people didn't like it due to the way it affected the rest of the keyboard. I really wish the Epic had something similar. It's harder to use a regular keyboard and try and emulate a real gaming d-pad.

I never really looked at the Epic's keyboard until the last 2 posts...it has that arrow setup I hate...

Cant manufactures make the arrow keys on these phones like the D Pad's on console controllers? Why have the down arrow flush with the L/R arrows like that? Space issues? For gaming, that D Pad on the Droid 1 is nice. Especially playing football.

I think u can map other keys to be like the a D Pad. If u can, the Epic looks like it would take 9 keys to be a good D Pad alternative. They way the keys are offset on the Droid 2....I wouldnt even try it....Now looking at my Droid 1, the keys/rows arent offset...I hate to say it but I think I like the keyboard setup on the Droid 1 better vs the Droid 2..

This thread helped me realize another thing I would look for in a future phone: A very specific keyboard setup. (even tho I dont really like the physical keyboards anymore)

This is what I do on my Epic. With emulators you can remap keys. I haven't found a single game on the market that lets you, but all emulators can. I've managed to come up with a pretty decent d-pad setup using 9 keys like you said. It's still nothing like a real d-pad... and in games that require precise movement, it's not really usable.

Droid X is by far the best!
Not. At. All. :p

If it does use a dual core cpu then it's a bonus but you can't run the latest games using just a cpu, so it all comes down to the intergrated graphics and how it compares to the current generation.

e.g. what would run better or rather what would you prefer?

PC #1
Dual Core 2.2GHz
Intergated Graphics

PC #2
Single Core 2.2GHz (faster clock for clock)
Dedicated Graphics Card.

When it comes to video games, the computer with the dedicated graphics card would handle games much better, but the first PC would handle everything else better.

So long as the application is multithreaded, if not the single core cpu which is faster clock for clock will be faster.

More cores doesnt always mean more performance.
