Best brightness app?

I find my Nexus S's screen brightness is too high at night and too low in the day on auto. I used Juice Defender betas brightness settings which let you set negative min values for lower than low brightness and brightness in an average day to be higher, but even on slow switching it seems to have spasms where it sets it to max brightness at the wrong times. I'd like an app that automatically changes brightness, but based on a custom brightness curve. Like JD, minus spasms. Anyone know of one? Thanks

I use Screen Filter: first turn brightness setting full up, then turn the app on indoors and evenings to reduce brightness and presumably save some juice; turn it off in daylight to get full brighness. App and widget versions available, they work about the same.

The above app -- Lux -- appears to be more desirable due its automatic brightness sensing, but it’s not for me for three reasons: not compatible on my phone (cuz it’s not root?), it says it’s in beta, yet they want money for it, albeit not much.
