best calender / task apps?

I'm currently using both Google calender and Google tasks for this. While I appreciate that they store my data for ease of recovery, the pitfall is that I can't access them without a data connection. My request would be primarily for replacement apps that can sync with Google calender but also be viewed offline, but I'll settle for just a purely offline one if there's no choice.

thanks Usta, I ended up going with Jorte since it has both a calender I can use offline when I want to as well as a task/to do list feature. And both sync with my google calender and tasks. And it's free

Yes, Jorte is quite a good alternative with many widgets. It also combines the task lists.
If you like it, then keep it.

I also use Jorte for calendar and tasks. But just to be clear, tasks don't automatically and immediately sync with Google Tasks. You have to either choose to sync manually (my choice for immediacy and battery saving) or sync automatically at a prescribed interval (I think from every hour to every 24 hours, IIRC).
